The Scrunchie Comb
( a special request from my family)
Here is a fun simple craft that I just wanted to tell you about: My new “scrunchie combs”! It’s kind of like a scrunchie, except it has hair combs on each side to pull the hair together instead of a pony tail. Have fun with this one. I hope the directions are clear enough!
Scrunchie Combs:
1 Cut a piece of fabric left over from a project about 4″X 6″.
1 Cut a piece of fabric left over from a project about 4″X 6″.
2 Fold it in half (the long way) and sew it inside out (like you would sew a scrunchie together).
3 Cut 2 pieces of thin elastic, about 3-4″ long depending how wide the back of your head is. (These will go inside your scrunchie, parallel to each other. one will run along the top and the other the bottom. (note: If these are too short, it will pull the sides of your face back as you try to put it in. too long and there won’t be anything to scrunch the hair together with.)
4 Turn in the first edge of the scrunchie (to make a finished edge) let about 1/4″ of both strips of the elastic hang out one side. Fold each one down just far enough to make a loop and sew ot down on top of itself. This can be tricky. It is probably best to do one at a time…jist make sure the two pieces of elastic stay parallel at the farthest points along the scrunchie. (once your scrunchie is finished you will fasten it to hair combs- ideally you want the parallel to be about the width apart as wide as your hair comb.)
5 Once you have the first side done (both pieces of elastic fastened, then you will do the same on the other side. Fold the edge in on the other side to make it neat. Then stretch the elastic through the scrunchie. Have the elastic stick out enough to make a loop for your comb and then sew it down. Repeat with the second piece of elastic.
6 When both pieces of elastic are fastened, you can stitch across that side to close up the hole the elastic is in. Then you can attach the hair combs. If you lay your “comb scrunchie” down in front of you with the 4 loops visible…place the combs upside down with the spikes facing each other. Hook your loops around the two outer spikes of each comb. make sure the elastic loops all the way up and around the top part of the comb or it will slip off the comb when you use it.
I like to put my hair in a folded bun and attach the one comb on one side of my head, then stretch the fabric and elastic across the back of my head to put the comb in on the other side.

I also like to use it in place of a clip…it makes a pretty bow.
I can even put Leah’s fine hair up in this, if I pull it into a pony tail first.
You can play around with different lengths and different ways to dress it up…maybe buttons, beads, or other things that were used to make the embelishments of a project. This is such a nice way to use up the scraps so that nothing goes to waste.
I didn’t create this idea…I have seen similar ideas…
I just made it my own with how I wanted to make it.
Have Fun!
Love Auntie Tina
